Tucker Carlson has reportedly told people close to him that he voted for Kanye West in the 2020 election, and not Donald Trump.
That particular revelation might come as a surprise to Trump’s most devout supporters. Carlson is known as a devotee to the MAGA movement. In fact, he’s been one of the most vocal talking heads against the Democrats and everything they stand for. However, it appears that despite being against Democrats, the Fox News talk show host wasn’t on board the Trump Train.
Shortly after the presidential election, Carlson started telling some program guests that he had cast his ballot for West, according to two people familiar with those conversations. Given Carlson’s fierce on-air commentary in favor of Trump, the guests were left wondering if Carlson was serious or merely joking.
“It’s his way of saying that he’s not just another Trumpette at Fox News like Sean Hannity,” one of the sources told Politico. However, that doesn’t mean Carlson did indeed vote for West.
However, other people close to Carlson said that he and West really do like each other. Even before the election, the talk show host told people he was going to vote for the singer.
Carlson is registered as a Republican to vote in Florida, according to Florida registration records. The Fox host voted in-person in 2020, according to voting records in Lee County, where Carlson lives part of the year.
Tucker Carlson Support Not Enough
If Carlson did vote for West, his support wasn’t enough to put the entertainer over the top. In fact, West failed to make the ballot in Florida. That means that if Carlson did vote for the performer, it was as a write-in vote. Even if that was the case, it wouldn’t have been an official vote.
West, running on a “Birthday Party” ticket, made the ballot in 12 states and garnered more than 60,000 votes. But unlike in states like New York and Connecticut, West didn’t submit the necessary paperwork to Florida’s elections division, so any write-in votes for him were not counted.
With Carlson declining to comment, Politico sought to verify whether local records might indicate that anyone did try to vote for West. Lee County does not track how many write-in votes non-qualified candidates like West received, complicating those efforts. But in the precinct where Carlson voted last year, there were eight invalid write-in votes for president, a county official said.
Because the county doesn’t track invalid votes, it’s impossible to know if Carlson was telling the truth. Tammy Lipa, another Lee County election official, said in a brief interview that she remembered that some people in the county did indeed write in West.
Carlson has long been thought of as someone who doesn’t always believe the things he says.
The question as to whether or not Carlson did vote for West is likely to never be answered.
