In the wake of the bombshell interview between Oprah Winfrey and Meghan and Harry, the popular TV host has opened up. She claims that even she was surprised by the claims they made against the Royal Family.
Oprah with Meghan and Harry
Oprah Winfrey said she knew that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wanted to tell their side of the story. However, she says that even she was surprised by the allegations made against the Royal Family.
Winfrey, 67, discussed the secrecy surrounding the interview this week with Nancy O’Dell. She stressed how important it was that nothing leaked before the interview aired on CBS. This was to ensure that no clip from the interview could be “exploited.”
Last month, Meghan and Harry sat down with Oprah to discuss their reasons for stepping back as senior members of the Royal Family. During the interview on Nancy O’Dell’s channel on talkshoplive, Oprah herself opened up. Winfrey said she had “no idea” that the interview would “reverberate” in the way it has.
Winfrey ‘surprised’ and ‘shocked’
O’Dell asked Oprah if she was “surprised” that Meghan and Harry were so open and forthcoming in the interview. Winfrey admitted that she was surprised, indeed. In fact, she was particularly shocked when the subject of race came up. This was when Meghan said Royal Family members had conversations with Harry over how dark their son Archie’s skin might be.
Oprah said that at that moment, her jaw dropped, and she paused for a minute before responding, “What?” Winfrey said of her process at the time that she thought, “What? You’re going there? You’re going all the way there?”
When asked how she set the interview up, Oprah explained that she had only texted Harry and Meghan prior to the interview. According to Winfrey, her understanding was that the Sussexes were only focused on sharing their truth with the rest of the world.
No contact with Meghan and Harry before the interview
Nancy asked Oprah how the interview was initially set up. In response, Winfrey said that she had only texted Harry and Meghan prior to the actual event. Oprah explained that her understanding was that the couple was focused only on sharing their truth with the world. Winfrey explained that whenever she is doing interviews with anybody for anything that is significant, she has a conversation with them before.
However, she didn’t see Meghan and Harry prior to the interview, but she did text them. Oprah told them intention was very important to her. She said they must tell her what their intention is, so they can be aligned in their goal. Oprah said that their shared intention was the truth. Meghan and Harry wanted to be able to tell their story in such a way that allowed them to be as truthful as possible.
Oprah added that one reason why it was such a powerful interview was that she knows how to ask questions. However, what makes it powerful is when you have someone else who is willing to be as open, as vulnerable, as truthful, as they were.
