Prince William And Prince Harry Pay Tribute To Their Grandfather, Prince Philip

Prince William and Prince Harry have paid tribute to their grandfather, Prince Philip, following his passing on Friday. The Queen’s consort died just months prior to his 100th birthday. Both princes recalled their granddad in their own way. William said his grandfather’s century of life was “defined by service.” Meanwhile, Harry said that the Duke of Edinburgh was always “authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit.”

William is second in line to the British throne and said his grandfather’s century of life was defined by service – “to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and queen, and to our family.” The prince said he will always be grateful that his wife, Kate, had so many years to get to know his grandfather.

Half an hour later, Prince Harry released a statement, where he reminisced about his grandfather. He said Philip was “authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm— and also because you never knew what he might say next.”

Harry also recalled Prince Philip as “my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right ‘til the end.” The prince said he, Meghan and Archie, as well as Philip’s future great-granddaughter, will also hold a special place for him in their hearts.

Prince Harry, who lives in California with his wife, Meghan Markle, has returned to the UK for the funeral. The media will be keeping a close eye on the Duke of Sussex after the bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey. That interview has left the royal family reeling with its allegations of racism and more.

As noted by NBC News, Meghan is currently pregnant with the couple’s second child, a daughter, and will not attend the funeral on Saturday.  According to Buckingham Palace officials, Markle’s physician had advised her not to travel at this stage of her pregnancy.

Rift between Prince Harry and Prince William

After Harry and Meghan departed from their senior royal duties and moved overseas, rumors of a rift between Harry and his brother surfaced. Harry and Meghan confirmed that they were separating from William and Kate’s Royal Foundation charity in June 2019. They declared they were starting their own initiative, Sussex Royal. Harry and Meghan have since formed the Archewell Foundation.

During the interview with Oprah, Harry said his relationship with his brother wasn’t good at the moment. However, he said he hoped that time would heal their differences. In the meantime, a truce has been called by the royal family, in order to honor Prince Philip.

Former British Prime Minister John Mayor made a statement on Sunday about the brother’s rift. He said Philip’s funeral and their shared grief was the “ideal opportunity” to mend any rifts between Harry and the royal family.

Prince Philip’s funeral will be a small affair with only 30 guests attending and will be held at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Saturday.
