WWE Raw 3/1: Rating and Ranking Every Match

Robby Steven

WWE Raw starts off the month of March with one of their most anticipated episodes in recent memory. After The Miz cashed in his MITB briefcase and won the WWE Title, Bobby Lashley was not far behind in demanding a title shot. Lashley took on The Miz in the main event, with several other matches on display.

Each match at WWE Raw will be given a brief review and analysis. Then each match will be given a rating and be ranked from worst to best.

Matches Ranked from Worst to Best

8) Nia Jax defeats Naomi
Nia Jax uses her power early on to toss Naomi around the ring. A bearhug by Jax is followed by a Samoan Drop. Jax finishes it off with a chokeslam powerbomb to end it.

Match Analysis: A typical squash to help promote Nia Jax and Shayna Baslzer defended the tag titles on NXT later this week. Take a Pass. SQUASH.

Braun’s breaking point

7) The Hurt Business defeats Braun Strowman & Adam Pierce
The match is made after Shane McMahon attempted to keep things cool with Braun Strowman. Braun easily uses his strength to overpower Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander. After Braun charges and runs shoulder-first into the ring post, he makes the tag to Pearce. After Pearce reluctantly enters the ring, he’s rolled up for the quick pin.

Match Analysis: The match was nothing really to see as it planted the seeds for a Braun vs Shane match at Wrestlemania. Take a Pass. *

Women’s Action

6) Charlotte defeated Shayna Baszler
Charlotte starts quickly before the bell with a right hand to Shayna. Nia Jax gets involved and leg drops Charlotte as we head to a commercial. After the break, Baszler is still in control, getting a two-count after a slam. Baszler works the arm of Charlotte but it’s short lives. Charlotte is able to make a quick comeback and hit the Natural Selection for the win on WWE Raw.

Match Analysis: This seemed like a placeholder to pass time until they figure out what they want to do for the Women’s Title at Wrestlemania. Take a Pass. *1/2

Retribution takes a loss

5) Riddle & Lucha House Party defeated Retribution
T-Bar starts off with a huge chokeslam on Riddle for a two count. Retribution rotates tags to beat down Riddle until a hot tag is made to Lirodo who cleans house. Metalik gets the tag and hits a hurricanrana on Mace before getting the win. After the match, Mustafa Ali rips into his crew before challenging Riddle to a match.

Match Analysis: This had potential but was short and used to set up the Riddle/Ali match. Skim it. **

WWE Raw: Riddle’s disappointment

4) Mustafa Ali defeats Riddle
Chain wrestling to start as Riddle gets the best of Ali who retreats to the outside. Back inside and Ali gets on the offense briefly before Riddle makes his comeback. Retribution distracts Riddle before Ali hits a modified backstabber for the win.

Match Analysis: This felt rushed to the point that it left you wanting to see both guys have time to tell a proper story. Odd decision to have Riddle lose only a week after winning the US Title to Ali who hasn’t been booked well at all. Skim It. **

WWE Raw: Priest shines

3) Damon Priest w/Bad Bunny defeated Elias w/Jaxon Ryker
Damon Priest quickly gets the advantage over Elias, wearing him down with an armbar. Elias gets back to his feet but is closelined over the top rope and onto the floor as we head to a commercial break. Back from the break and Priest remains in control. Elias is able to whip Priest’s neck across the top rope before attacking him from the outside. Priest makes his comeback and gets the win after Hit the Lights.

Match Analysis: As a match, it was pretty decent. It just seems odd that they would be pushing Priest so strongly and then have him work an extended match with Elias. Elias has been booked as not much better than a jobber so it’s an odd decision. Skim It. **1/4

WWE Title Lumberjack Match

Bobby Lashley defeated The Miz
2) The match failed to occur on two occasions during the night. Once due to alleged “cramps” from The Miz and then because The Miz ran to the bank for a countout. Shane McMahon comes out to announce that the match will be a Lumberjack Match. The Miz attempted to hit Lashley with the title belt but was caught. The Miz rushes back in to punch Lashley which has no effect. The Lumberjacks throw The Miz back into the ring who beats him down and tosses him from the corner into the middle of the ring.

The Miz retreats outside but is thrown back in before Lashley hits the Flatlinner. Weak punches are thrown by The Miz as Lashley gorilla presses him out of the ring to the Lumberjacks. Lashley then hits a spinebuster and puts on The Hurtlock for the win and the title.

Match Analysis: The payoff throughout the night paid off nicely with The Miz as a scared chicken champion. The Era of the Almighty has begun. The match was a squash but one that is Worth a Watch. SQUASH.

WWE Raw: Friends turned enemies

1) Drew McIntyre defeated Sheamus
Prior to the match, The Miz, John Morrison, and MVP all come out to express their opinion about the WWE Title scene. Sheamus then comes out and Drew McIntyre cuts him off on the entrance ramp as they brawl to a commercial break. Back from the break and the bell officially rings as both men against strikes and punches. Sheamus gets the upper hand until he’s caught in the ropes. McIntyre goes off with 10 stiff hammers to the chest of Sheamus on the apron. Sheamus is able to regain control with a Brogue Kick to McIntyre who falls onto the floor.

Back from the commercial break and Sheamus is working over the jaw of McIntyre before hitting the Irish Curse for a two count. The fight spills to the floor as McIntyre hits Sheamus with a belly-to-belly and a vertical suplex onto the announce table. Back in the ring and McIntyre gets a two-count after a top rope elbow. Sheamus climbs to the top rope but is met with a McIntyre headbutt and a belly-to-belly for another close count. WWE Raw cuts to another commercial as we return with both men brawling on their knees. After trading near falls, McIntyre gets another two-count after hitting White Noise from the second rope. Sheamus then sets up for the Brogue Kick but is hit with the Claymore from McIntyre for the win.

Match Analysis: It’s become the “cool” thing to do to crap on WWE Raw lately considering the product has been less than stellar. Despite this, the match between McIntyre and Sheamus was one of the best on the show in some time. Must-Watch. ****1/4
