Nikki Haley was once such a supporter of Donald Trump, she falsely credited him with getting Americans the COVID-19 vaccine. On Friday, his former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations broke from her former boss.
Haley gave an interview with Politico where she said Republicans were wrong for following Trump after the January 6 Capitol riots.
“We need to acknowledge he let us down,” Haley, who served in her ambassador role under Trump, said. “He went down a path he shouldn’t have, and we shouldn’t have followed him, and we shouldn’t have listened to him. And we can’t let that ever happen again.”
Haley added she hasn’t spoken with Trump since the riots. She said that she’s especially uncomfortable with a speech he gave at a rally riot before the riots.
“He’s got a big bully pulpit. He should be responsible with it,” she said.
Nikki Haley Called Out
Some of the former governor of South Carolina gave Haley rave reviews for her admission about Trump. However, others pointed out the interview seemed to be more about political expedience.
The official Twitter account for the organization, Public Citizen hit the biggest bullseye in this line of attack. The group posted pictures of headlines showing Haley defend Trump 18 days ago. After the riots.
Indeed, in that headline, she said people needed to give Trump “a break.”

United States member of congress, Jackie Speier lambasted the former Ambassador for her reversal.
“Nikki Haley is now saying the Republicans shouldn’t have followed Donald Trump. Wow! What a difference a week makes when she was saying the Democrats should not impeach the President and just get over it,” she wrote on Twitter. “Liz Cheney is courageous. Nikki Haley is not.”

Kyle Griffin, an executive producer for MSNBC wondered why anyone is taking Haley seriously with this interview.
“Given Nikki Haley’s long history of condemning Trump and then supporting him,” he wrote. “Why are her new quotes being cast as a legitimate condemnation and not just more political calculation?”
Not Deserting Trump Altogether
Haley specifically cited the riots as the reason she no longer supports Trump. However, she also pointed out there’s reasons to still admire what he did.
“What we need to do is take the good that he built, leave the bad that he did,” she said in the interview. “And get back to a place where we can be a good, valuable, effective party. But at the same time, it’s bigger than the party.”
One Twitter user thinks Haley is playing both sides and doing it because she wants to run for higher office.
“Nikki Haley has a preexisting condition called presidential ambition,” Lindy Li wrote. “Symptoms include abetting fascists and saying whatever she needs to do to get elected.”
