Bodies don’t climb into water tanks by themselves. But a maintenance man was incredibly confused when they found Elisa Lam’s nude body in the Cecil Hotel’s water tank up on the roof. To this day, no one knows exactly what happened to Elisa Lam. However, a Netflix special will take a deep dive into the case and hopefully shed a little more light.

No One Knows What Happened To Elisa Lam — And The Evidence Is Definitely Confusing

There is a puzzling surveillance tape — but that almost leaves more questions than answers. In the videotape, viewers can see Lam step in and out of an elevator before getting in and pressing several buttons. She pokes her head outside and looks around, before ducking back in and pressing herself up against the wall, as if someone is chasing her.

The maintenance man went to check the Cecil Hotel’s water supply after many guests complained about the low pressure, and that’s where he found Elisa Lam. But how did she get there in the first place?

All access points to the roof were only accessible by employees who had the keys. However, someone did make a video that showed Elisa Lam could have used the fire escape to climb the roof and bypass the security systems. Furthermore, two of the water tanks were opened.

Eventually, her death was ruled an accidental drowning. She did have bipolar disorder, so some speculate she was acting out and recklessly climbed in the tank. But the water tanks are large and hotel staff members needed a ladder to climb to the top and look inside. And who replaced the lid to the water tank after Lam climbed inside the tank? Even if she climbed in the tank herself and drowned, surely someone would have noticed when they went to close the tank. Even if Lam’s death was an accident, many don’t believe she was alone on that day. There are still so many unresolved questions.

The Cecil Hotel Has Quite A Dark History

Elisa Lam isn’t the only one to die under mysterious circumstances at the Cecil Hotel.  Many murders and suicides allegedly took place there, only adding to the mystery. The Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez, also lived there for a while. Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel is now available on Netflix for subscribers to see. If you’ve seen American Horror Story: Hotel, you’re probably already at least a little familiar with the place. The Cecil Hotel inspired the theme.
