WWE Smackdown 2/5: Results and Match Ratings

Robby Steven

Just days after the Royal Rumble, WWE Smackdown continues down the road to Wrestlemania. Roman Reigns retained his title against Kevin Owens, but could potentially face rumble winner Edge at Wrestlemania. The Intercontinental Title will also be up for grabs in a Tripe Threat Match. In addition, Hulk Hogan will make an appearance.

WWE Smackdown: Romans’ Ulitmadium

Universal Champion Roman Reigns kicks off WWE Smackdown. After briefly gloating about his win over Kevin Owens, Reigns expressed frustration with Edge not being at Friday Night Smackdown. Reigns gave the WWE Royal Rumble winner an ultimatum to decide on his Wrestlemania choice by the end of the night.

Match Analysis: This is the feud that just won’t end. Dominick is still very green but you can see he tries hard and puts in the effort. Dominick getting a win is nice but they have to move on from this feud as it drags WWE Smackdown down. Skim It. **

WWE: Pro Wrestlers

Daniel Bryan vs Cesaro
Daniel Bryan starts off quickly, taking Cesar to the corer and then to the outside of the ring. Bryan hits a dive to the outside before throwing Cesaro back in and connecting with a missile dropkick. Cesaro is able to turn the tables with a stiff uppercut. Bryan lands several kicks that lead to a two-count. Bryan’s running knee is countered by Cesaro into a modified backbreaker and then a big swing. Cesaro locks in the sharpshooter for the shocking submission win.

Match Analysis: Huge surprise for Cesaro not just winning, but also making Daniel Bryan tap out. Cesaro has reportedly just signed a multi-year contract so that’s possibly why he’s getting a bigger push. Fun match though as one would expect from these two on WWE Smackdown. Worth a Watch. ***1/4

WWE Smackdown: Bayley in action

Bayley vs Ruby Riott
A back and forth exchange starts the match before Bayley launches Riott into the turnbuckle for a snake eyes. Riott ate the top turnbuckle in a nasty spot. Bayley works Riott’s arm before Ruby is able to connect on an arm drag from the second rope. A quick roll-up for Riott gets a two count before Bayley goes back to the arm. Billie Kay attempts to interfere but it backfires and Bayley gets the win after the Rose Plant.

Match Analysis: The Riott Squad dissension continues as Baylay is booked strong headed into Wrestlemania. It was fine but nothing to see here. Take a Pass. *1/2

Bianca Belair’s decision

Bianca Belair enters the ring to talk about her Royal Rumble win. As she debates her options, Reginald comes down followed by Carmella who both question who Bayley might face at Wrestlemania. Sasha Banks then appears and warns Belair that she would lose at Wrestlemania if she decides to challenge her. After another snarky comment from Reginald, Belair whips him out of the ring with her hair.

After hitting a rolling German suplex on Ziggler, Roode nails an inverted DDT for the win.

Match Analysis: Perfectly acceptable tag team match as they build toward a Ziggler/Roode rematch with the Street Profits. Skim It. **1/4

Back from commercial and Sami Zayn has the advantage but it doesn’t last long as he’s hit with a top rope dropkick by Crews. Big E then hits several suplexes on Crews but is locked in a sleeper by Zayn. Crews is tossed out of the ring by Big E in a scary spot. Crews is able to get back in and get a 2 count on Zayn after a frog splash. Crews sets up for a head and arm suplex but Big E grabs his wastes and tosses both ben with a German. After Crews takes out Zayn on the outside, he rushed into the ring but is hit with the Big Ending. Big E covers and gets the win to retain his title.

Match Analysis: This was one hell of a match on WWE Smackdown. Triple Threat Matches can be tricky at times, but they made it work. There was never a dull moment and everything worked. Hopefully, they continue the feud with these three. Must-Watch. ***3/4

Edge comes to the ring to talk about who he might face at Wrestlemania. Only minutes later, Roman Reigns makes his way down to the ring to confront the Royal Rumble winner.
