WWE Royal Rumble 2021: Predictions and Match Card

Robby Steven

The WWE Royal Rumble PPV will air live on the WWE Network this Sunday, January 31. With the first PPV of 2021 just days away, the line-up is taking shape as the Road to Wrestlemania moves forward. With the matches set, it’s time to predict what could happen at one of the most anticipated shows of the WWE calendar.

WWE Royal Rumble predictions

Women’s Tag Team Championship
Asuka & Charlotte Flair vs. Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax
Charlotte Flair returned to the WWE last month and instantly made an impact. Charlotte made the supreme decision to team with Raw Women’s Champion Asuka to challenge for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship. After winning the titles, they’ve had to deal with the wrath of the former champions in the form of Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax. Tension has been teased between both Baszler and Jax which could lead to dissension between the two this Sunday night. Expect Charlotte and Asuka to retain at the WWE Royal Rumble. Prediction: Asuka & Charlotte Flair

WWE: Universal Championship

Last Man Standing match
Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens
Roman Reigns has taken his career to the next level ever since his heel turn last year. Since picking up the Universal Title, Reigns has been the anchor of Friday Night Smackdown, making it the brand to see in the WWE. In recent months, Reigns has declared dominance on the blue brand but has had to face staunch competition from Kevin Owens. Reigns defeated Owens in a TLC match last month, as well as in a cage match on Christmas night. Despite Owens putting a beating on Reigns to close last week’s Smackdown, it’s a safe bet to say that the “Head of the Table” walks out a winner at the Royal Rumble. Prediction: Roman Reigns

WWE Championship

Drew McIntyre vs. Goldberg
Once again the WWE has wiped off the dirt from Goldberg and injected him into a questionable situation. Despite being a WCW legend, the law of diminishing returns applies to Goldberg as he’s proved to be less valued with each appearance. The build-up to his match with Drew McIntyre has been uneventful and dull, with fans reacting with eye rolls. While Goldberg has won titles from top stars in the past (Kevin Owens, The Fiend) don’t expect lightning to strike against the WWE Royal Rumble. Prediction: Drew McIntyre

Rumble Matches

Women’s Royal Rumble match
With the potential of stacking the women’s Royal Rumble match with not just stars from Raw and Smackdown but also NXT, there’s no shortage of star power. Despite high-profile names like Charlotte, Baley, Alexa Bliss, and Shayna Baszler, there’s a certain buzz around Rhea Ripley. I’m putting my money on Ripley as they put a rocket on her back and see how far she can go. Prediction: Rhea Ripley

Men’s Royal Rumble match
The men’s Royal Rumble can go in several different directions and it’s hard to pinpoint exactly who it will be. Due to the uncertainty, it makes it one of the more intriguing rumbles in some time. Could it be the returning Edge looking to get to the top of the mountain one more time? Maybe Randy Orton will be the second person to win three rumble matches (Steve Austin being the other). Maybe a surprise entrant gets the win heading into Wrestlemania. If I had to make a choice (which I do for this article) I’m going with Daniel Bryan to win the Royal Rumble main event against Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania. Prediction: Daniel Bryan

Potential Matches:

With only five matches locked in, several others can take place even if it’s on the pre-show. Expect Bobby Lashley to defend his US Title against Matt Riddle to continue their feud. Big E also looks set to defend his Intercontinental Title again Sami Zayn and Apollo Crews as the three have been battling it out on Friday Night Smackdown.
