HBO Max reached into a vault somewhere and pulled out a classic tv show that is sure to the attention of all generations. Ladies and Gentlemen, Wonder Woman the original television series is now streaming on HBO Max for all subscribers. Lynda Carter once again shines on our screens as the original Amazonian princess. And just in time for the Christmas release of Wonder Woman 1984.
The Original Wonder Woman
Lynda Carter starred as Diana for sixty episodes for three seasons from 1975 to 1979. In the first season, Diane meets Major Steve Trevor and travels to 1940s America. During the season she protects and helps the trouble-magnet soldier. Then in seasons two and three, there is a time jump to the 1970s and the show was renamed The New Adventures of Wonder Woman. Lynda Carter truly laid the foundation for all future actresses of this iconic character.
Carter has had multiple other roles since her success as Diana. One role was as Principal Powers in Sky High where she portrays the principal of a high school for superpowered teens. In this role she has an ironic line, “I’m not Wonder Woman you know.” It deserved a laugh. Most recently though Carter has portrayed the U.S. President on CW’s Supergirl. But when she was honored with her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame she reminisced to Variety. “I guess if there’s ever a role that was meant for me, it was Wonder Woman.”
Getting Hyped
The dose blast from the past is no doubt to get fans excited to see Gal Gadot return to the big screen as Princess Diana of Themyscira. The new Wonder Woman 1984 will be released on Christmas day in Theaters as well as on HBO Max. WW1984 sees Gadot return with director Patty Jenkins, and they plan to relive the success of 2017’s Wonder Woman.
The movie has thus far received generally positive reviews. The current score on Rotten Tomatoes is a solid 74%. But there are a few critics that say the sequel doesn’t measure up to the original. Moira Macdonald of the Seattle Times wrote, “Maybe this is the kind of movie that needs a massive screen, but on mine at home the sequel felt overstuffed, overlong and a little flat.’ Macdonald continued saying, “It’s not terrible, […]but you watch thinking of the original three years ago, and wishing this one were better.” But Christy Lemire of Rogerebert.com said, “Wonder Woman 1984” does deliver a welcome escape, as well as a much-needed message of hope.”
With the positive and negative critiques for the movie weighing in all, we as an audience can do to watch and hopefully enjoy. Wonder Woman 1984 will open in select theaters and on HBO Max at noon on Christmas Day.
