Days of Our Lives fans wonder who Dr. Wilhelm Rolf (William Utay) is in the popular NBC soap. Dr. Wilhelm Rolf joined the cast of in 1997, played by William Utay. He played the role until 2003 before leaving and returning in June 2007. The character was onscreen for a little over a year before leaving again in September 2008. Dr. Rolf wasn’t seen in Salem again until October of 2017 when he reprised the role for a short time. He once again made another short appearance in 2018. However, he’s now in Salem wreaking havoc this fall for many on the NBC soap.
Days of Our Lives: Wilhem Rolf’s Early Days In Salem
Dr. Wilhelm Rolf’s first storyline on Days of Our Lives involved creating a cure for Roman Brady (then Wayne Northrop), who had been poisoned. Dr. Rolf is a Biochemist, Dentist, Plastic Surgeon, and DiMera henchman. Dr. Rolf’s known to bring people back from the dead with his “cures”. Dr. Rolf usually wasn’t seen by most of the Salemites but instead did most of his work behind the scenes at the DiMera Mansion. Dr. Rolf was usually seen with Bart Beiderbecke (Steve Blackwood), another DiMera henchman if he wasn’t with one of the DiMera’s.
The only family of Dr. Rolf’s that has appeared onscreen was his niece Marlo. She was a pregnant alcoholic who showed up in town during the time Lexie Carver (Renee Jones) and Abe Carver (James Reynolds) were trying to have a child of their own. Stefano formed a plan to take Marlo’s baby and switch it with Hope Brady’s (Kristian Alfonso) baby that Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) believed was his after they had relations while Hope was Princess Gina. Dr. Rolf’s great nephew was born and named John Thomas Brady Reiber. Dr. Rolf has also been romantically linked to Hattie Adams (Andrea Hall/Deidre Hall), who he did surgery on so she would be a replica of Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall).

Dr. Rolf Is DOOL’s Resident Mad Scientist
With all Dr. Rolf’s mad scientist skills, he’s known to wreak havoc upon the residents of Salem. He’s also responsible for turning Hope into Princess Gina. Additionally, he was the mastermind behind the Gemini twins, Cassie Brady (Alexis Thorpe) and Rex Brady (Kyle Lowder). The twins were created from Kate Roberts (Lauren Koslow) eggs and Roman’s sperm but at first, everyone believed they were Marlena and Tony DiMera’s (Thaao Peghlis) children, which is what Stefano wanted everyone to believe. The twins were programmed to kill anyone who wanted to do harm to the DiMera’s.
After the Gemini twins came to Salem in a “pod”, as teenagers, Dr. Rolf took a job as a Bioethics Professor at Salem University so he could keep an eye on them. During this time, Dr. Rolf was presumed dead when a crate fell on top of him at the docks. Like many other Salem residents, he returned from the dead when Stefano returned to town and he was ready to cause more problems. After John Black (Drake Hogestyn) was presumed dead because of a hit and run accident, Dr. Rolf re-programmed him to complete a “mission” for Stefano.

Days of Our Lives fans recall things didn’t work out for Stefano and Dr. Rolf. Sadly, Stefano was left in a vegetative state after being injected with a drug. So Dr. Rolf was forced to work as John’s butler when John claimed the DiMera estate as his own. He wasn’t happy in his new butler role and yearned for the days of being a mad scientist. Once Stefano came out of his coma he reclaimed his estate—including his mad scientist Dr. Rolf.
Days of Our Lives: Dr. Rolf Gone But Not Forgotten
Dr. Rolf disappeared from Salem years ago and was all but forgotten to the residents of Salem. Then Ben Weston (Robert Scott Wilson) shows up and announces Will Horton’s (Chandler Massey) alive. The revelation leads Kate Roberts to visit Clyde Weston (James Read) in jail. Clyde informs her that his old cellmate Dr. Rolf told him he personally brought Will back to life. So, the search was on for Dr. Rolf. Thanks to Andre DiMera’s help, Hope Brady found him in a hotel. Unfortunately, Dr. Rolf appeared to commit suicide when pushed by Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney). As with most deaths in Salem, Dr. Rolf’s was not as it appeared. Unbeknownst to the residents of Salem, Dr. Rolf was given the life-saving shot that he gave to Will and some other deceased Salem residents.
Days of Our Lives: Dr. Rolf Now Works For Kristen DiMera
Dr. Rolf appeared once again on Days of Our Lives. However, he now reports to Kristen DiMera (Stacy Haiduk) as her mad scientist. While working out of a warehouse, owned by Xander Cook (Paul Telfer), Dr. Rolf nursed many believed to be dead Salemites back to life. Dr. Rolf was once again believed to be dead after an explosion in the warehouse. However, he survived, as did the others trapped in the burning building.
Dr. Rolf once again assisted Kristen as she wreaked havoc on Salem by creating a mask for Kristen to wear and appear to be Nicole Walker(Arianne Zucker). Now he’s involved in helping Mayor Jack Deveraux (Matthew Ashford) regain his memories. Also, his devious boss has asked him to once again swap another woman’s fetus to her womb. Looks like Dr. Rolf’s stay in Salem will run through the end of the year. He certainly has a colorful and checkered past and his future looks to be headed on the same path.
